Choose your hardwood species carefully. Our hardwood flooring experts can make recommendations based on your style, space, and budget.

What’s the Difference Between Solid and Engineered Hardwood Flooring?

It's difficult, if not impossible, to tell hardwood and engineered hardwood apart. Don't be fooled: they're built quite differently.

  • Solid hardwood flooring is made from solid wood planks. It's a traditional favorite for many and considered a worthwhile investment. Solid hardwood can be refinished repeatedly as the years march on, It does have some limitations though. Solid hardwood floors can't be used below grade, and are more sensitive to moisture and humidity. Careful attention to heating and air conditioning levels is needed.
  • Engineered hardwood flooring, a more recent innovation, is manufactured flooring made from many layers of wood and resin. These planks are made to perform. They're denser, more forgiving, and can be used in areas off-limits to solid hardwood. Engineered hardwood floors can be used below grade and are generally sturdier, but certain types can't be refinished.

Where Can I Install Hardwood Flooring?

Hardwood should be avoided in the bathroom or a kitchen, unless you choose a waterproof engineered hardwood floor.

Careful climate control should be your goal if you long for solid hardwood flooring. If you have pets or small children, our experts will tell you to consider using an engineered hardwood floor.

Some of our favorite spots for hardwood floors include:

  • Bedrooms
  • Man Caves
  • Finished Basements
  • Hallways
  • Home Offices
  • Meeting Rooms
  • Foyers
  • Living Rooms
  • Retail Stores

Should I Install My Own Hardwood Floors?

Unless you’re an experienced carpenter or woodworker, we don’t really recommend it!

Let’s face it: hardwood installation can be a very long and complicated process: one that can very soon go wrong if you don’t know what you’re doing. It’s very physical, requires certain tools, and plenty of spare time. Most of us will make mistakes.

Those mistakes can end up costing you a lot of money. Many product warranties and local building codes require professional flooring installation, so don’t risk being fined or not being covered by warranty down the road.
